Soil Profile Description Of Common Soil Series

This chapter is a compilation of soil descriptions and analytical data for more than 103 common soil series in Peninsular Malaysia. The database collates information from various sources, mainly from soil survey reports, soil correlation tour bulletins, previous publications and routine soil survey records. Consequently, some of the profile descriptions used in this book may differ slightly from the original data compiled by the authors. Furthermore, the photographs for the soil series were taken recently and not at the original location of the pits where the soil series were first established.

The profile descriptions, sampling procedures and soil analysis were carried out according to guidelines similar to international standards. In Malaysia, the most recent guideline to soil profile description is The Guidelines for Soil Profile Description in Malaysia, which is adapted from FAO guidelines. Changes were made to suit local conditions. The classification of soils is based on USDA Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1998) and FAO-UNESCO Legend (FAO, 1974). 103 soil series together with their profile descriptions and analytical data are listed in alphabetical order according to the Table 4.
